In "puzzle", a city is built piece by piece. Black outlines, drawn with a firm line, delimit façades, windows and chimneys. Each shape is filled in its own way: pink and bright red, violet, deep green, golden ochre. The sky moves from red to orange, then lightens into silvery grey towards the right.

The eye travels from one block to the next, as one looks for the missing piece. The light windows, open onto the white, give the whole some air, while the large dark areas anchor it. One feels an end-of-day energy, alive and a little electric, without the image ever becoming noisy.

Ambiance & interior

This canvas will come into its own on a large, uncluttered wall, in a living room, an office or an entrance hall, in clear, direct daylight that will make the reds and oranges vibrate. It will sit well with white, ecru or light grey walls, and will converse with natural wood, linen or touches of deep green. In the evening, a warm light will lend more density to the darker areas.

Texture & technique

  • Black contours drawn with a clean gesture, cutting the city into blocks and windows
  • Backgrounds worked in washes and transparencies, with denser passages of pink, violet and green
  • Drips and fine orange traces in the upper part, which let the gesture show
  • Grid of small golden dots in the upper left corner, on an ochre ground
  • Broad black and grey rubbings that give weight to the towers and façades
