Blocks of saffron, red and violet, scratched with black lines, on a surface that catches the light.
€800
Here the planes pile up and overlap without room to breathe: blocks of yellow ochre, violet and red interlock like tiles or walls in perspective. The fine black lines, drawn as if in ink, serve as a framework and guide the eye from top to bottom. The pale yellow-green block at the bottom centre is the anchor point, and the bright violet at the top right provides the counterpoint. The warm, saturated palette gives depth. One senses an end-of-day light, very Mediterranean or African. The surface is heavily worked, with scraped and sanded impasto, rendered like plaster, earth or stone; translucent glazes beneath the thick layers, visible in the violets and reds; vertical drips on the right bring movement, as do the stencilled or imprinted motifs. This is a materialist abstraction, with allusions to architecture or textile (patchwork, pagne).
Register your interestBlocks of colour overlap like sections of wall or lit windows: saffron orange, golden yellow, bright red, and a deep violet that brings a graver note. Black lines, fine and nervous, draw the edges, sometimes straight, sometimes slightly curved. A few rows of dots punctuate the canvas like a small, steady rhythm.
The surface is grainy, hollowed in places, crossed by vertical drips. One can sense the hand that scrapes, covers over, then lets the layer beneath show through. The eye moves from one block to the next without settling, and the whole gives off a frank warmth, close to the light of late afternoon.
Ambiance & interior
This canvas will sit well in a bright living space, a sitting room, a dining room or an office, where daylight can bring out the relief of the texture. It will readily converse with off-white, linen-beige or soft grey walls, as well as with natural wood, tan leather or a deep green. A soft light from the side will bring out the relief and the brighter touches.
Texture & technique
- Granular impasto, scraped and gouged, especially in the yellows and oranges
- Fine black lines, drawn freehand, delimiting the blocks of colour
- Vertical drips at centre right and in the lower part, softening the construction
- Series of black dots at top right and bottom left, like a repeated rhythm
- Superimposed veils of colour, with touches of acid green and a pale area incised with a circle on the left
